For those New York residents who cannot install solar panels on their property, a community solar subscription is a fantastic way to save money and support renewable energy without the need for a more traditional rooftop solar panel installation. New York community solar gives you all the key benefits of a solar panel installation and offers an easy entry point into the world of clean, renewable energy.

What is a Community Solar Subscription?

A community solar subscription is an agreement to receive energy from a local solar farm in exchange for a monthly subscription fee. This is different compared to a traditional energy service company(ESCO)/retail energy contract (the folks who knock on your door), since those contracts only provide you with a discount on the supply portion of your energy bill. Community solar provides a credit that covers both supply and delivery. As most of us are aware, the delivery portion of your bill is about 60% of your entire electric bill. With this in mind, a credit that covers not just supply, but also delivery, is vital for the best energy savings.

In New York State community solar projects are required to have a minimum of 10 subscribers for each project. There is no maximum quantity of subscribers per project. Instead, the maximum is usually dictated by the total capacity of the solar facility. In New York State the NYS SIR (New York State Standardized Interconnection Requirements) limits community solar projects to a capacity of 5 MW AC. Community solar projects in New York can be co-located, unlike Minnesota and a few other states that do not allow co-location of solar facilities. Community solar subscribers must have a minimum load of 1,000 kWhs/year.
