Javits Center
March 26, 2019

The solar revolution keeps on rolling in New York City, with the Jacob. K Javits Center set to welcome the biggest rooftop solar installation in the city. Located on the far west side of Manhattan, the convention center welcomes this huge solar panel installation alongside a larger 1.5 billion dollar infrastructure expansion, which has been ongoing since 2017. Governor Andrew Cuomo made the announcement just last week.

Currently, the title of largest rooftop solar installation is held by Brooklyn Navy Yard, which houses over 3,000 solar panels on the roof of Building 293. This new installation for Javits Center, however, will eclipse this with an array comprised of over 4,000 solar panels. For comparison, the largest solar farm in the entire city can be found on Staten Island, where a ten-acre ground-mounted array is made up of 9,000 panels.

Of course, the Jacob K. Javits Center is already noted for its existing eco-friendly infrastructure, thanks to a seven-acre green roof capable of absorbing stormwater, as well as housing birds and bees. According to Gov. Cuomo’s office, the green roof will not be affected by the solar installation, which itself will produce 1.4 million megawatts of solar energy per year, hugely offsetting carbon emissions.

This project, set to be designed and installed by Siemens, marks another big step forward for renewable, sustainable energy in New York City.
