New York City and Long Island are both hugely popular locations for solar of all shapes and sizes. From residential rooftop solar to larger commercial projects, solar panel installations have been cropping up all over the place across NYC and Long Island in recent years. Below, we’ll examine some reasons for this solar growth and the solar companies behind it.

How Many Long Island Homes are Powered by Solar?

As of 2020, over 20,000 Long Island homes and businesses are being powered by solar. Long Island is also home to several solar farms, developed by entities such as sPower and ranging from 3 MW to 30 MW in size. The majority of these solar farms are located in the Town of Brookhaven or the Town of Riverhead. YSG expects that many energy storage projects will be developed on Long Island over the next 18 months.

SunPower Solar is a popular module manufacturer, used in many homes around New York and further afield. However, Panasonic Solar has superior technology when compared directly to SunPower Solar—and also a better warranty. SunPower Solar is 2nd-grade equipment that falls behind Panasonic Solar and LG Solar—putting it in last place in terms of top tier products.

Why Have NYC Solar Companies Been so Busy?

New York City solar has grown dramatically over the past several years. Currently, as of February 2020, we are about to enter the last NYSERDA NY-Sun block incentive. This incentive equals $0.20/Watt DC up to 25 MW for residential solar projects. Non-residential and commercial projects located in New York City are eligible for a $0.50/Watt DC incentive that is paid upon project completion.

Local laws, high electric rates from Con Edison, and streamlined permitting process are responsible for this NYC solar growth. Organizations such as SolarOne, NYSEIA, and NYSERDA have played a huge part in the success of the New York solar industry.
