Microgrids, Solar Panels, Long Island, New York, YSG Solar

Microgrids have been a huge buzzword in the last five years. Local governments, large and small, have been seeking technologies that will provide energy resilience when needed. In 2012, superstorm Sandy gave a huge wake up call to Long Island, New York, and the greater New York City area. Many went without power for weeks and businesses suffered major losses. This scenario has become way too familiar, not just on the east coast, but in other areas across the country—and we need change.

Thankfully, technological advances with lithium-ion energy storage systems decreased the cost of solar modules, and reduced financing costs, making microgrids possible.

Microgrid Evaluation

Understanding critical loads, and infrastructure for the community, is our first step in sizing out the requirements for your microgrid. Upon completion of this step, we take an inventory of any existing assets that can be used for the microgrid. Existing resources may include gas-fired generators, controls, and/or on-site solar energy systems. Following the inventory step, we move into the next phase—our design and implementation process.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we cover microgrid design and implementation on the YSG Solar blog.

PSEG-LI is the major municipal-owned utility on Long Island. The utility is owned by LIPA (Long Island Power Authority) and operated by PSEG (Public Service Enterprise Group) and the entity PSEG-LI. The utility has on-going solicitations for non-wire alternatives, dynamic load-management tariffs, net metering, VDER, and demand response. Microgrids may also have the ability for dual-market participation. This could allow microgrids to participate on the distribution side, utilizing PSEG-LI's tariffs and incentive programs, while at the same time utilizing NYISO's tariffs, and capacity & demand response programs.

At the time of writing, Rockville Center (Nassau County, New York) is just one municipality moving forward with a power purchase agreement (PPA) and microgrid.

YSG Solar is a project development vehicle, responsible for commoditizing energy infrastructure projects. We work with long-term owners and operators to provide clean energy assets with stable, predictable cash flows. YSG's market focus is distributed generation and utility-scale projects located within North America.
