What is the Smart DG Hub?

The Smart DG Hub, an initiative from Sustainable CUNY of the City University of New York, works in collaboration with City and State agencies, industry, utilities, and other stakeholders with the aim of removing market barriers to widespread deployment of distributed generation technologies. A full list of resources and further information can be found here on the NY Solar Map and Portal.

NYC Energy Storage Systems Zoning Guide

This is a high-level guide to understanding zoning provisions for Energy Storage Systems (ESSs). It includes an in-depth overview of recent changes to ESS zoning, applicable to both accessory and non-accessory energy storage systems. The full zoning guide for NYC energy storage systems, which was developed in collaboration with the NYC Mayor’s Office of Climate & Sustainability, NYSERDA, and other partners, is available to view and download here. Additionally, this section of the NY Solar Map website contains a wide range of resources concerning energy storage permitting and interconnection in New York City.

NYC & Urban Community Solar Resources

The available resources for NYC & urban community solar were developed alongside the Real Estate Board of New York, NYPA, Con Edison, EPRI, NREL, and various other stakeholders, with additional support provided by the U.S. Department of Energy. The resources available for NYC & urban community solar include:

  • The Community Solar and Community Solar+Storage Roadmap

  • The Quick Start Guide to Evaluating a NYC Building for Community Solar

  • The Project Flow Checklist for Installing Onsite Community Solar in NYC

  • The EDGE Economic Modeling Tool

You can view the full range of NYC & Urban Community Resources at this link.

NYC Energy Storage Systems Site Plan Checklist

The Energy Storage Systems Site Plan Checklist offers guidance on the creation of site plan materials, including visual aids and examples. The site plan is a key component of the permitting application package for a large energy storage system, and this checklist was developed in collaboration with the FDNY, NYSERDA, and a number of other partners. A full list of storage resources is available here on the NY Solar Map website, and it includes:

  • Information on Storage Permitting

  • Roadmaps & Surveys

  • Case Studies, Fact Sheets, and Guidance
