Residents of Irondequoit are gathering at a Town Board meeting tonight to show support for the Town passing legislation. The law will enable the purchase of 100% renewable energy for all households and small businesses through Community Choice Aggregation.

What is Community Choice Aggregation?

Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) is a bulk energy purchase mechanism. The aggregated demand of all households and small businesses in the municipality can be used to negotiate better electricity rates. It can also be used to negotiate other benefits such as 100% renewable energy sources, and the phase-in of locally generated solar power.

A look at CCA in New York

We already see several Towns and Villages in various stages of moving forward with CCA. So far, the Villages of Brockport and Lima and the Town of Geneva have passed the local law and decided to go 100% renewable. The Town of Brighton, City of Geneva, and Village of Scottsville have passed the local law, but have not yet decided whether to pursue price solely or to also go with 100% renewable energy. The Town of Pittsford has been actively engaging its residents in a dialogue about what to do. The City of Rochester has expressed intent to move forward with CCA after clearing internal hurdles.

What can you do?

The Rochester People’s Climate Coalition, along with the Mother Out Front organization have been working together to educate Irondequoit residents about CCA and advocate for 100% renewable implementation. If you're an Irondequoit resident, show your support by attending the hearing and either share a comment or simply stand or clap. If you're not a resident of Irondequoit, your presence will still show support.
