Rhode Island is one of many states embracing community solar as a means of providing clean, renewable energy for its citizens. Earlier this month, the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (OER) launched an official website for its Community Solar Marketplace, with the intention of informing residents about the benefits of community solar.

The Benefits of Community Solar

Community solar offers energy consumers an alternative route to solar energy—and the savings associated with going solar. For those who are unable to install panels on their own property, a community solar subscription is a way to save on energy costs, while supporting clean, renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions. The community solar model can be particularly beneficial for low-and-moderate-income households looking to reduce energy expenditure, thanks to the ease of access. Some key benefits of community solar include:

  • Utility bill savings each month

  • No solar panel installation required

  • Adjustable subscriptions

  • Transferable subscriptions

  • Environmentally friendly energy source

  • Supports local economy

The Rhode Island Community Solar Marketplace

The Rhode Island Community Solar Marketplace website offers a range of information about all aspects of community solar, including sections dedicated to:

  • How community solar works

  • Community solar projects completed so far

  • Community solar projects in progress

  • Community solar subscription information

  • Frequently asked questions about community solar

This information is intended to both educate and encourage Rhode Island residents with regard to community solar in the area.

Rhode Island Community Solar Projects

Broncos Highway Solar is the first Rhode Island community solar project, having gone live back in September of 2019. The project has already proven popular with Rhode Island residents, and 715 National Grid customers have subscribed so far. Those subscribed customers can expect to offset their electricity bill by about 10% each month.

Given the success of the Broncos Highway Solar project, it’s no surprise that a number of new community solar projects are already in progress throughout Rhode Island. According to the official website for the Rhode Island Community Solar Marketplace, there are currently 3 completed projects, with 15 more in progress, and a total of 773 customers signed up thus far.

Rhode Island Renewable Energy Targets

The launch of the Rhode Island Community Solar Marketplace is also intended to help Rhode Island reach its ambitious clean energy targets. Rhode Island is currently 90% of the way toward its goal of making the state energy system 10 times cleaner by the end of 2020, and is set to hit 1,000 MW of clean energy by the end of the year. Looking to the future, a target of 100% clean energy by the end of the decade has been set. The surge of community solar projects should play an important role in reaching these ambitious goals.
