Although solar developers are seeking land for the development of solar projects, certain locations may be unsuitable for solar farms. This is true of East Hampton and many other Long Island areas, where restrictions with regard to land usage and the high cost of real estate could hinder development right from the outset.

However, an alternative to traditional ground-mounted solar farms is available. Solar canopies, utilizing the space above already existing parking lots could offer solar developers another way to build large-scale solar projects. On a smaller scale, carport solar installations are also a potential avenue to explore.

In fact, there are already a number of solar arrays installed over parking lots across Suffolk County, at locations including the Riverhead County Center, the H. Lee Dennison Building, and the County Legislature in Hauppauge.

These solar parking lot installations do offer an innovative alternative to ground-mounted arrays, but it’s important to note that they are generally more expensive to install and so will cost more. Nonetheless, this initial cost could be offset by the long-term savings and benefits of the parking lot/carport solar array.

If you’re based in East Hampton, or anywhere on Long Island, get in touch with YSG Solar today. We can discuss your options for a solar installation—ground-mounted, carport, or parking lot—and determine the best project for your specific needs.
