Tesla Solar
December 6, 2018

There’s never been a better time to invest in solar energy. With a range of benefits from reducing the environmental impact of your home to cutting energy costs, going solar is as efficient as ever and is now affordable for the average homeowner.

While traditional solar panels are a solid investment, you’ve probably heard a thing or two about Tesla’s solar roof. Tesla shook the industry when it announced its acquisition of SolarCity, the solar energy company founded by Elon Musk’s cousins Lyndon and Peter Rive. Since then, the company has made a lot of noise about its innovative solar roof and has finally begun the first installments in California.

Despite all of the hype, is a Tesla solar roof right for everyone? If you’re itching to go solar, here’s what to consider:

How does Tesla’s solar roof compare to traditional solar panels?

Unlike traditional solar panels, which are a relatively lightweight addition to existing roofs, Tesla’s solar roof is an entire roof replacement. This is reflected by the hefty price tag. According to a study by Energy Sage, Tesla’s price of $21.85 per square foot can end up costing homeowners nearly double what traditional solar panels would cost.

Some homeowners may find the cost to be worth it due to the visual appeal of the roof. The product combines both glass solar tile and glass non-solar tile to yield a clean roof design that complements a home’s architecture. But a disadvantage of this combined material is that it can only generate three quarters of the level of solar electricity that traditional solar panels can generate.

With all things considered, choosing between Tesla’s solar roof and traditional solar panels comes down to priorities. If you need a new roof, highly value your roof’s appearance and have money to spend, Tesla’s solar roof fits the bill. If you don’t need a new roof, are more concerned with efficiency than aesthetics and want a budget-friendly option, traditional solar panels are the way to go.
