Solar Panels, Commercial Solar Contractors, 2020, YSG Solar

The solar power industry is broken down into various segments, with different organizations focusing on certain sectors. Commercial solar contractors tend to focus on what is called the C&I market—also known as commercial and industrial. Certain organizations may work in the utility-scale solar market as well.

Utility-Scale Solar vs Commercial-Scale Solar: Comparing Equity Returns

From an investment standpoint, utility-scale solar projects tend to have a nominal internal rate of return on equity compared to commercial & industrial solar facilities which may have double digit yields. Traditional utility-scale solar investments can be related to "fixed income" assets and usually have a long-term investment grade off-taker, such as the local EDC (electric distribution company). Commercial solar projects can be a non-rated entity that may have a shadow rating to manage the risk profile of the power off-taker.

Utility-Scale Solar vs Commercial-Scale Solar: System Sizes

In the solar industry, projects that exceed 10 MW in capacity may be considered small utility-scale solar. The SGIP (Self-Generation Incentive Program) process is usually for projects 25 MW+ in capacity, and as the solar industry has matured we have noticed a trend for larger and larger solar facilities. Certain solar developers have a minimum of 200 MW per project and YSG is seeing more and more 400 MW+ solar projects.
