A recent newsletter from the California Solar + Storage Association (CALSSA) has detailed the growth of California energy storage in 2019. The key numbers highlighting this growth are as follows:

  • Residential Energy Storage Installations: 50% increase in MW capacity from 2018 to 2019.

  • Commercial Energy Storage Installations: 11% increase in MW capacity from 2018 to 2019.

  • From 2017 to 2019, commercial energy storage systems have almost doubled, and residential energy storage systems have seen a ninefold increase.

These figures really show the staggering growth of California energy storage in such a short space of time. It’s clear that both residential and commercial energy consumers are beginning to embrace the potential of energy storage. The chart below, courtesy of CALSSA, illustrates the growth of California energy storage from 2014 through 2019.

California Energy Storage Interconnections

All in all, over 10,000 California energy consumers contributed to the installation of 138 MW of energy storage throughout 2019. In terms of energy storage growth, this is an increase of 27% from 2018, and three times the installed energy storage capacity of 2017.

In total, 389 different contractors were responsible for this newly-installed energy storage capacity in California. In the table below, CALSSA has broken down the installed energy storage kW from the top twelve California storage installers in terms of residential and commercial installations. The twelve contractors listed below are responsible for 78% of all storage capacity installed in 2019.

Notably, 2019 also saw a huge milestone for solar deployment in the state of California, with the state hitting the landmark of one million solar roofs. In its newsletter detailing this information, CALSSA pointed out that this 2019 energy storage growth was similar to the 2008-2009 growth of the solar PV market, both in terms of the number of projects and the total MW installed.

The graphics below, again courtesy of CALSSA, show a breakdown of both residential and commercial energy storage interconnections from the three big utility companies—PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E.
