The University of Pittsburgh is embracing solar power in a big way. The University has struck an agreement with the Gaucho Solar Project for the supply of clean, renewable energy for the next twenty years. This agreement will supply enough energy to the University to account for roughly 13% of the electricity on campus.

The solar farm in question (the Gaucho Solar Project) is set to be up and running by 2022 and will be located close to Pittsburgh International Airport. For a full news report on this new solar farm, you can view the video from CBS Pittsburgh at this link.

YSG Solar is happy to see universities and colleges purchasing power from solar power farms. Energy is able to be purchased under a Power Purchase Agreement which will typically lock in a rate for 20 to 25 years—a rate that is discounted compared to the utility rate.

Projects that are 1 MW to 5 MWs may be able to utilize aggregated net metering—if they are within 2 miles of each other based on the current regulations. For larger loads and utility-scale projects, virtual power purchase agreements, sleeved power purchase agreements, or physical power purchase agreements are the most common mechanisms.
