Wellsville, New York, YSG Solar
June 29, 2020

YSG Solar is working in Corning, New York and the Town of Wellsville to identify key landowners located near substations and three-phase power. YSG says they are only working with property owners that are within 2 miles of distribution substations owned by National Grid.

Solar farms are usually built in areas where there are a lot of loads to serve. Ideally, developers like YSG want to construct a solar farm near an area that is populated with industrial and commercial buildings or manufacturers.

In other business, the Town of Wellsville agreed to be the lead agent on a current solar project from Omni Navitas-Solar Fields in Wellsville at 2495 Lewis Road.

Councilman Mike Miller pointed out that the town does not currently have a Solar Law. The board has decided to enact a law, which will be subject to a public hearing and 30-day notice. The board created a “Solar SEQR Committee” to work on these projects. Councilman Jesse Case was appointed Chair.

Wes Fortney, a member of the planning board, spoke against the solar farm project on Lewis Road during community comment. Fortney raised several concerns, including foreign control of solar energy companies and the fiscal viability of such projects. Fortney also said the project will have little to no positive effect on local jobs.
