A guide to New York State’s Energy Plan

Microgrid, community choice aggregation, community solar, battery storage and virtual power plants are just a few of the common buzzwords floating around the renewable energy industry. As the policy and technological race speeds up we are brought to the energy grid of the future.

Since the 1990s and early days of deregulation, we have seen drastic changes from energy service contracts, the explosion of LED lighting, demand response, and residential solar to name a few. Now in 2018, almost 30 years since the start of these changes, there are many pieces that need to be put together in order to make sure energy efficiency and clean, locally produced power are at the core of the State’s energy system.

Just imagine a huge puzzle scattered and the pieces of the puzzle are distributed resources. Our next step in this energy movement is to put the puzzle together by moving away from a centralized system to a distributed system. We can do this by having system operators and utilities communicate with aggregators and distributed resource owners. Utilizing distributed energy resources and generators on a distribution level, compared to a transmission level, not only improves grid resilience but also improves operational efficiency. This idea can be seen in the image below depicting the REV energy model.

What is REV?

In order to commit to a clean energy future, Governor Cuomo has put into place a comprehensive energy strategy for New York called Reforming the Energy Vision (REV). The goal of REV is to help consumers make more informed energy choices, develop new energy products and services, and protect the environment while creating new jobs and economic opportunities throughout the State. Some of REV’s goals are outlined below.
